MCC 16 - No Guts, No Glory

9/12/08 - Using his signature triangle choke, TJ “The Spider” O’Brien forced current champ Josh “Jigsaw” Atwell to tapout in first round action at MCC 16 No Guts, No Glory at Bucs Arena last Saturday.  O’Brien pulled off some high level jiu jitsu, transitioning from mount, to arm bar, to triangle, leaving nowhere for Atwell to escape. Congrats to the new MCC Featherweight champion!

Lawler KO’s Smith at EliteXC

Robbie Lawler Validates EliteXC Middle Weight Belt

After their first fight at EliteXC’s May 31st event ended when Robbie Lawler accidentally poked Scott Smith in the eye, the rematch ended again with Lawler walking away with championship belt. But this time, Lawler put Smith away after seeing his own blood and realizing he could be in trouble.

Robbie Lawler, right, weathers Scott Smith's early attacks before stopping the challenger in the second round.

The EliteXC middle weight champ immediately turned the tide on Smith using the clinch to launch a series of knees to the body, which caused Smith to fall in pain, and soon after be finished by Lawler with a second-round TKO.

“The thing is, I got cut and I knew I had to step it up and not give the ref any time to stop it,” Lawler said post fight. “If there was a lull in the action, he (Herb Dean) might have looked at it, so I had to keep the pace up and keep moving forward.”

UFC

UFC - Ultimate Fighting Championship

When the UFC was formed in the mid 90’s it was marketed as “human cockfighting” and “fights to the death” with an emphasis on violence. It was the true test to determine which form of fighting / martial arts form was best. Royce Gracie quickly showed that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was the dominant form. Mostly because Royce was good and tough as nails, but the other fighters hadn’t seen it before and just didn’t know how to counter it. Today though, Mixed Martial Arts, lead by the UFC is a tactical sport, like chess on a mat. And if you’re just a jiu-jitsu master these days, you may not last too long.
