MMA Betting Overview

MMA betting works similarly to betting on any professional sports event. Each bout has a favorite, an underdog, and a line that reflects the odds. The more information you have, the greater your advantage. Knowing something about the fighters, their strengths and weaknesses, and how they perform against certain competitors can be invaluable. It can make the difference between winning and losing the majority of your bets. Below, you’ll learn about the ufc betting lines and more specific the moneyline, the strengths that are most important, and why you should consider betting on the underdogs. Before signing up at an online sportsbook, be sure you pick through the top sportsbook promotion codes so you can max out your bonus and beat the bookie to the punch.

Current UFC Betting Lines

This is an up to date and current list of UFC odds and lines offered at one of the top books to bet on MMA.

Understanding The Moneyline

Whenever you place an MMA bet, you’ll see the two fighters listed, each with a number to the right of their names. One number will be positive and the other will be negative. The fighter who has a positive number is the underdog of the bout. The fighter with the negative number is the favorite. As an example, let’s assume that you are betting on UFC 85 (between Matt Hughes and Thiago Alves). Here is what you would see…

———————-
Hughes      – 200
Alves       + 160
———————-

The positive number reflects how much money you would win if you bet $100 on Alves and he eliminates Hughes. The negative number reflects how much money you would need to bet on Hughes in order to win $100 (assuming he wins the bout).

Fighter Strengths And Underdogs

In MMA betting, you should focus on 3 main areas of strength for each fighter. First, note how well he strikes and defends himself on his feet. Second, how adept is at wrestling his opponent to the ground? Finally, watch his level of control while grappling on the ground. These are the most important skills in mixed martial arts and they should influence your bets.

If you only bet on the favorites, the moneyline will keep you from making bigger profits over the long run. Upsets are fairly common in MMA betting, so placing bets on the underdogs can be profitable. The underdogs will win less frequently, but the payout is much larger when they do.

Those are the basics of betting on MMA bouts. Watch the moneyline, review each fighters’ strengths, and don’t be afraid to bet on the underdogs. Do those 3 things and you’ll have an edge over most other bettors.  If you’d like to know more, check out our extensive (and under construction) mma betting guide.
