The Ultimate Fighter 4

The Ultimate Fighter 4 – Season Recap

Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter returns with a notable change. Previous seasons had included MMA fighters hoping to earn a spot on the UFC circuit. Season 4 begins with 16 middleweight and welterweight fighters who have already participated in the UFC. The common thread among them is that none have yet won a UFC title.

Episode 1 starts with the fighters being split between Team No Love and Team Mojo. Though past seasons featured standout coaches, Season 4 includes several trainers and advisors, including Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Mark DellaGrotte, and Marc Laimon. By the episode’s end, Shonie Carter has eliminated Rich Clementi, and Team No Love suffers its first loss.

In Episode 2, Edwin DeWees from Team Mojo defeats Gideon Ray. Team Mojo holds their streak in Episode 3 when Chris Lytle beats Pete Spratt. During Episode 4, an apparent staph infection spreads through the house and claims half the fighters. The tables turn on Team Mojo when Scott Smith is eliminated by Travis Lutter. However, in Episode 5, Team No Love suffers a loss as Mikey Burnett is taken out by Din Thomas.

Team Mojo earn another victory in Episode 6 as Pete Sell defeats Charles McCarthy (who’s personality has earned him the nickname Captain Miserable). In Episode 7, Matt Serra continues Team Mojo’s streak by eliminating Pete Spratt. During Episode 8, Patrick Côté trounces Jorge Rivera as the remaining fighters move one step closer to the semi-finals.

Episode 9 pairs Chris Lytle against Din Thomas. Ultimately, Lytle defeats Thomas, eliminating him even though the timekeeper accidentally adds an extra minute on round 1. By the end of Episode 10, Shonie Carter is beaten by Matt Serra. Meanwhile, tensions mount between Serra and Laimon, who has shown disrespect toward MMA legends, the Gracie family.

During Episode 11, Pete Sell spends time training with Liddell in preparation for his bout with Travis Lutter. His training does not pay off and Lutter eliminates him. Episode 12 begins and Burnett learns his neck is injured. Surgery will prevent him from participating in the Octagon for a year. At the end of the episode, Patrick Côté pummels Edwin Dewees and wins a place in the Season Finale. In the end, Matt Serra and Travis Lutter both win UFC contracts for being the last 2 fighters standing.
