MCC 16 - No Guts, No Glory

9/12/08 - Using his signature triangle choke, TJ “The Spider” O’Brien forced current champ Josh “Jigsaw” Atwell to tapout in first round action at MCC 16 No Guts, No Glory at Bucs Arena last Saturday.  O’Brien pulled off some high level jiu jitsu, transitioning from mount, to arm bar, to triangle, leaving nowhere for Atwell to escape. Congrats to the new MCC Featherweight champion!

St. Pierre Dominates Fitch at UFC 87

Georges “Rush” St. Pierre defends championship belt

GSP Defends TitleI just finished watching the UFC 87 PPV and the fights were just as impressive as the first time I saw them, which was live at UFC 87. I had a chance to attend my first UFC event and spent the first 6 fights watching from the front row (Matt Serra’s seat) and row 4 (my seat) for the other fights.

It was truly impressive to see GSP in person, as he looked like a mini-hulk. But watching him dominate Jon Fitch for 25 minutes was even more impressive, especially being able to take down and control Fitch pretty much as he wanted.

Brock Lesnar notched his first UFC win as he dominated Heath Herring for their entire 3 round fight. Lesnar charged out of the gate with a flying knee that missed, but seconds later caught Herring with a laser right to the face, knocking Heath to his back. Herring would have no answers and Brock gave the hometown fans something to cheer about, after another Minneapolis resident Roger Huerta was defeated by Kenny Florian, in what was another great fight.

I’ll be posting my pictures from UFC 87 later today, take care and check out all the news on UFC 87.

Lawler KO’s Smith at EliteXC

Robbie Lawler Validates EliteXC Middle Weight Belt

After their first fight at EliteXC’s May 31st event ended when Robbie Lawler accidentally poked Scott Smith in the eye, the rematch ended again with Lawler walking away with championship belt. But this time, Lawler put Smith away after seeing his own blood and realizing he could be in trouble.

Robbie Lawler, right, weathers Scott Smith's early attacks before stopping the challenger in the second round.

The EliteXC middle weight champ immediately turned the tide on Smith using the clinch to launch a series of knees to the body, which caused Smith to fall in pain, and soon after be finished by Lawler with a second-round TKO.

“The thing is, I got cut and I knew I had to step it up and not give the ref any time to stop it,” Lawler said post fight. “If there was a lull in the action, he (Herb Dean) might have looked at it, so I had to keep the pace up and keep moving forward.”

Affliction: Banned

Fedor Emelianenko pwns Tim Sylvia

Over the weekend I watched the Affliction: Banned pay-per-view. I was originally planning on attending this event and had found some cheap Affliction tickets to buy, but had to settle for my living room this time. Affliction says this event was put together after the UFC banned all Affliction brand clothing from their events. Common sense says different.

Affliction Banned

I’ll get into that, but first I wanted to say that I came away impressed with the Affliction Banned show and feel it has a real chance to finally bring some needed competition to the UFC. I have nothing against the UFC’s dominant market share in the fastest growing sport in the world, but real competition will bring better fights, better events and will be best for the customers (that’s you and I).

Affliction, an apparel company first, says they put together their first MMA promotion only after they were banned from sponsoring any UFC fighters. This really makes no sense to me. What does maks sense? The UFC banned Affliction clothing only after getting wind of Affliction’s desire to setup their own MMA event. Or maybe it was because Joe Rogan said “if I see one more Affliction t-shirt I’m gonna puke!” on a previous UFC event ppv broadcast. Rogan’s a baaaad man!

It appears the UFC may also see Affliction as real competition, as they set up a free Spike TV UFC event, featuring who they say is the greatest pound for pound fighter on the planet, Anderson “The Spider” Silva. At the same time Affliction was airing their debut mma pay-per-view featuring who they say is the greatest pound for pound fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko.

Coincidence? I think not.

Inside MMA talks Fedor, Affliction Card, and Marketing

With the popularity of Affliction Clothing and their relationships with established fighters, announcers and celebrities, having Donald Trump as a backer and a possible tv deal with FOX, Affliction may be a force to reckon with in the world of Mixed Martial Arts.

Only time will tell.

Forrest Griffin defeats Rampage Jackson at UFC 86

Forrest Griffin - new UFC ChampionJust over three years ago Forrest Griffin was sleeping on a friends couch and didn’t have medical insurance, although he made a living as a fighter. Now, he is the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion after claiming a unanimous five round decision over Quintin “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 86.

In front of a sold out Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV, Griffin overcame a shaky first round by exploding in the opening moments of the second round with two leg kicks that connected to Jackson’s left knee and thigh respectively. Jackson buckled and Forrest pounced, taking down, mounting and ground and pounding Rampage for most of round 2.

The next three rounds were pretty close, but Forrest pressed the action and outpointed the former champion for the victory. Rampage, always the class act, said after the fight, “He whupped my ass! Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. He deserves it.”

Other UFC 86 fight results - winners in bold:

  • Forrest Griffin vs Rampage Jackson (Unanimous Decison R5)
  • Patrick Kote vs Ricardo Almeida (Split Decision R3)

Thiago Alves defeats Matt Hughes at UFC 85 Bedlam

Thiago AlvesAfter Thiago “Pitbull” Alves weighed in at 174 lbs, failing to make the 170 lb limit, Matt Hughes said it didn’t matter and the fight would continue on as planned. So Alves, who looked to be a good 10 lbs heavier than Hughes at fight time, used devastating knees in the 2nd round to stop Matt and claim the victory.

Alves begged Dana White for a title fight, but failing to make weight didn’t gain any points with White. If you know Dana, his biggest piss-point is a guy who doesn’t make weight. We’ll monitor the situation as it plays out.

WEC Faber vs Pulver Event Results

World Extreme Cagefighting MMA Fight Results

WEC Champion Urijah FaberWhat a great night of fights for the WEC. Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres successfully defended their WEC title belts in two of the most exciting fights in recent memory. Winners in bold.

  • Jens Pulver vs. Urijah Faber
  • Yoshiro Maeda vs. Miguel Angel Torres
  • Chuck Grigsby vs. Mark Munoz
  • Kenneth Alexander vs. Rob McCullough

WEC Faber vs Pulver Results

I put my money on my fellow Iowa boy Jens Pulver and he gave Urijah a great fight. Urijah definitely won the fight and is a true champion. That being said, I’d like to know what the judge that scored the bout 50-44 was thinking. I mean, come-on. I know it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but which round did Pulver do nothing? And on top of that, all of Fabers illegal blows should have counted negatively in some way, but I guess the ref needs to call the fouls which included:

  • 1 eye poke (stopped fight for 15 sec)
  • 2 groin kicks (stopped fight on 1 groin kick for 30 sec)
  • 2 elbows to the throat (not called)
  • 5-7 punches to the back of the head and neck (not called)

I’m definitely looking forward to watching the tape of this fight. I may be sour because my guy lost, but I can’t stand it when illegal blows are not called. Not only does it hurt the integrity and credibility of the game, but it’s dangerous for the fighters.

Again congrats to the champs Faber and Torres and see ya next weekend when I bet on UFC 85. I’ll have to reload my bank roll and get some mma betting advice from the pros as I’m now 1-3 in my mma betting career. All 3 losses were bets on underdogs. Very interesting. That may be some data I need to look at further.
