MCC 16 - No Guts, No Glory

9/12/08 - Using his signature triangle choke, TJ “The Spider” O’Brien forced current champ Josh “Jigsaw” Atwell to tapout in first round action at MCC 16 No Guts, No Glory at Bucs Arena last Saturday.  O’Brien pulled off some high level jiu jitsu, transitioning from mount, to arm bar, to triangle, leaving nowhere for Atwell to escape. Congrats to the new MCC Featherweight champion!

St. Pierre Dominates Fitch at UFC 87

Georges “Rush” St. Pierre defends championship belt

GSP Defends TitleI just finished watching the UFC 87 PPV and the fights were just as impressive as the first time I saw them, which was live at UFC 87. I had a chance to attend my first UFC event and spent the first 6 fights watching from the front row (Matt Serra’s seat) and row 4 (my seat) for the other fights.

It was truly impressive to see GSP in person, as he looked like a mini-hulk. But watching him dominate Jon Fitch for 25 minutes was even more impressive, especially being able to take down and control Fitch pretty much as he wanted.

Brock Lesnar notched his first UFC win as he dominated Heath Herring for their entire 3 round fight. Lesnar charged out of the gate with a flying knee that missed, but seconds later caught Herring with a laser right to the face, knocking Heath to his back. Herring would have no answers and Brock gave the hometown fans something to cheer about, after another Minneapolis resident Roger Huerta was defeated by Kenny Florian, in what was another great fight.

I’ll be posting my pictures from UFC 87 later today, take care and check out all the news on UFC 87.

UFC 87 Seek & Destroy

Pierre, Fitch, Lesnar, Herring, Florian, Huerta

UFC comes to Minnesota for the first time ever and the card may turn out to be one of the best in UFC history. Headlined by the Welterweight Championship match between current champion George “Rush” St. Pierre and Jon Fitch, who’s riding an 8 fight UFC win streak.

Also on the card, hometown favorites Brock Lesnar and Roger ‘El Matador’ Huerta take on Heath ‘The Texas Crazy Horse’ Herring and Kenny ‘ KenFlo’ Florian respectively. And I’ll be there to see it. I can’t wait!

Look for me… Section Floor 6, Row 4, Seat 1

I’ll be at UFC 87 tonight, so if you’re watching on pay per view, look for me in row 4, seat 1.

Carlos Condit won by TKO in round 4 after a great back and forth fight with Hiromitsu Miura to retain his welterweight belt. Iraq War veteran Brian Stann lost for the first time as 21 year old Steve Cantwell redeemed a previous loss to Stann this year and came away with the Light Heavyweight championship belt.

Lawler KO’s Smith at EliteXC

Robbie Lawler Validates EliteXC Middle Weight Belt

After their first fight at EliteXC’s May 31st event ended when Robbie Lawler accidentally poked Scott Smith in the eye, the rematch ended again with Lawler walking away with championship belt. But this time, Lawler put Smith away after seeing his own blood and realizing he could be in trouble.

Robbie Lawler, right, weathers Scott Smith's early attacks before stopping the challenger in the second round.

The EliteXC middle weight champ immediately turned the tide on Smith using the clinch to launch a series of knees to the body, which caused Smith to fall in pain, and soon after be finished by Lawler with a second-round TKO.

“The thing is, I got cut and I knew I had to step it up and not give the ref any time to stop it,” Lawler said post fight. “If there was a lull in the action, he (Herb Dean) might have looked at it, so I had to keep the pace up and keep moving forward.”

Elite XC - Smith vs Lawler II

Robbie Lawler vs Scott Smith on CBS

EliteXC will make a second stab at prime time mixed martial arts fighting on July 26 when Robbie Lawler faces Scott Smith for the second time in less than two months. The first meeting between the two fighters, which happened on EliteXC’s May 31 debut on CBS, was ruled a no contest after Lawler accidentally poked Smith in the eye.

Lawler-Smith II

This time EliteXC doesn’t have Kimbo Slice and thus, the buzz from EliteXC 01 has subsided and the attention has been spread thin, making it an even better test case for MMA’s future on network TV. If the event bombs, EliteXC, will have a much tougher time riding out the year.

Affliction: Banned

Fedor Emelianenko pwns Tim Sylvia

Over the weekend I watched the Affliction: Banned pay-per-view. I was originally planning on attending this event and had found some cheap Affliction tickets to buy, but had to settle for my living room this time. Affliction says this event was put together after the UFC banned all Affliction brand clothing from their events. Common sense says different.

Affliction Banned

I’ll get into that, but first I wanted to say that I came away impressed with the Affliction Banned show and feel it has a real chance to finally bring some needed competition to the UFC. I have nothing against the UFC’s dominant market share in the fastest growing sport in the world, but real competition will bring better fights, better events and will be best for the customers (that’s you and I).

Affliction, an apparel company first, says they put together their first MMA promotion only after they were banned from sponsoring any UFC fighters. This really makes no sense to me. What does maks sense? The UFC banned Affliction clothing only after getting wind of Affliction’s desire to setup their own MMA event. Or maybe it was because Joe Rogan said “if I see one more Affliction t-shirt I’m gonna puke!” on a previous UFC event ppv broadcast. Rogan’s a baaaad man!

It appears the UFC may also see Affliction as real competition, as they set up a free Spike TV UFC event, featuring who they say is the greatest pound for pound fighter on the planet, Anderson “The Spider” Silva. At the same time Affliction was airing their debut mma pay-per-view featuring who they say is the greatest pound for pound fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko.

Coincidence? I think not.

Inside MMA talks Fedor, Affliction Card, and Marketing

With the popularity of Affliction Clothing and their relationships with established fighters, announcers and celebrities, having Donald Trump as a backer and a possible tv deal with FOX, Affliction may be a force to reckon with in the world of Mixed Martial Arts.

Only time will tell.

Forrest Griffin defeats Rampage Jackson at UFC 86

Forrest Griffin - new UFC ChampionJust over three years ago Forrest Griffin was sleeping on a friends couch and didn’t have medical insurance, although he made a living as a fighter. Now, he is the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion after claiming a unanimous five round decision over Quintin “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 86.

In front of a sold out Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV, Griffin overcame a shaky first round by exploding in the opening moments of the second round with two leg kicks that connected to Jackson’s left knee and thigh respectively. Jackson buckled and Forrest pounced, taking down, mounting and ground and pounding Rampage for most of round 2.

The next three rounds were pretty close, but Forrest pressed the action and outpointed the former champion for the victory. Rampage, always the class act, said after the fight, “He whupped my ass! Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. He deserves it.”

Thiago Alves defeats Matt Hughes at UFC 85 Bedlam

Thiago AlvesAfter Thiago “Pitbull” Alves weighed in at 174 lbs, failing to make the 170 lb limit, Matt Hughes said it didn’t matter and the fight would continue on as planned. So Alves, who looked to be a good 10 lbs heavier than Hughes at fight time, used devastating knees in the 2nd round to stop Matt and claim the victory.

Alves begged Dana White for a title fight, but failing to make weight didn’t gain any points with White. If you know Dana, his biggest piss-point is a guy who doesn’t make weight. We’ll monitor the situation as it plays out.

WEC Faber vs Pulver Event Results

World Extreme Cagefighting MMA Fight Results

WEC Champion Urijah FaberWhat a great night of fights for the WEC. Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres successfully defended their WEC title belts in two of the most exciting fights in recent memory. Winners in bold.

  • Jens Pulver vs. Urijah Faber
  • Yoshiro Maeda vs. Miguel Angel Torres
  • Chuck Grigsby vs. Mark Munoz
  • Kenneth Alexander vs. Rob McCullough

WEC Faber vs Pulver Results

I put my money on my fellow Iowa boy Jens Pulver and he gave Urijah a great fight. Urijah definitely won the fight and is a true champion. That being said, I’d like to know what the judge that scored the bout 50-44 was thinking. I mean, come-on. I know it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but which round did Pulver do nothing? And on top of that, all of Fabers illegal blows should have counted negatively in some way, but I guess the ref needs to call the fouls which included:

  • 1 eye poke (stopped fight for 15 sec)
  • 2 groin kicks (stopped fight on 1 groin kick for 30 sec)
  • 2 elbows to the throat (not called)
  • 5-7 punches to the back of the head and neck (not called)

I’m definitely looking forward to watching the tape of this fight. I may be sour because my guy lost, but I can’t stand it when illegal blows are not called. Not only does it hurt the integrity and credibility of the game, but it’s dangerous for the fighters.

Again congrats to the champs Faber and Torres and see ya next weekend when I bet on UFC 85. I’ll have to reload my bank roll and get some mma betting advice from the pros as I’m now 1-3 in my mma betting career. All 3 losses were bets on underdogs. Very interesting. That may be some data I need to look at further.

Bad first night of betting on mma for me. But I only lost $16.81, so I won’t be eating out of the dumpster anytime too soon hopefully. One thing for sure, I’ll be searching the net for mma betting advice over the next few weeks to try and increase my mma betting bankroll.

BJ PennFight 7: BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk

  • Penn, Unanimous Decision, 5, 5:00 (my prediction)
  • Round 1: Penn 10-9 (my analysis)
  • Round 2: Penn 10-9 (my analysis)
  • Penn, TKO, 3, 4:00-4:59 (official results)
  • My UFC 84 fight prediction record: 4-3
  • My UFC 84 fight betting record 1-2

Good takedown defense and jabs from Penn. Nice counters from Sherk. Penn controlled the first round with crisp jabs and crosses. Sherk had some nice counters, but round 1 goes to BJ.

BJ’s boxing looks top notch tonight, but watch for more take-down attempts from Sherk in round 3.

Over! Excellent knee.

Fight 6: Ivan Salaverry vs. Rousimar Palhares

  • Palhares, TKO, 2, 2:00-2:59 (my prediction)
  • Palhares, Submission Arm Bar, 1, (official results)
  • My UFC 84 fight prediction record: 3-3

Let’s see Rousimar is a newcomer, I’ve picked all newcomers to lose and all newcomers have won. I’m taking Palheres… he’s a newcomer from Brazil and 16-1. Sounds good to me.

Fight 5: Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei SilvaWanderlei Silva

  • Jardine, TKO, 3, 3:00-3:59 (my prediction)
  • Silva, TKO, 1, 4:00 - 4:59 (official results)
  • My UFC 84 fight prediction record: 2-3
  • My UFC 84 fight betting record 0-2

Jardine beat Liddell. Liddell beat Silva. Jardine beats Silva.

Not good to bet against Wanderlei.

Fight 4: Shane Carwin vs. Christian Wellisch

  • Wellisch, TKO, 1, 2:00-2:59 (my prediction)
  • Carwin, TKO, 1, 1:00-1:59 (official results)
  • My UFC 84 fight prediction record: 2-2

Octagon jitters? Nope!

  • BJ Penn lead in pre-fight poll down to 57%-43%

Fight 3: Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic

  • Gouveia, TKO, 2, 2:00-2:59 (my prediction)
  • Round 1: Reljic 10-9 (my analysis)
  • Reljic, TKO, 2, (1:00-1:59) (official results)
  • My UFC 84 fight prediction record: 2-1

I don’t know a lot about Reljic, but he’s undefeated and he looks tough. I’m taking Gouveia though. He dominated Keith Jardine before gasing out, so hopefully he came in shape…plus octagon jitters for Reljic.

wwwwicked leg kicks from Goran! Nice straight left hand too. And no jitters it appears.

Ground and pound from Gouveia. Finish him……now! Doh! What the heck happened there? Ah, left to the temple. Thanks Joe Rogan!

Fight 2: Lyoto Machida vs. Tito OrtizLyoto Machida

  • Machida, Unanimous Decision, 3, 5:00 (my prediction)
  • Round 1: Machida 10-9 (my analysis)
  • Round 2: Machida 10-9 (my analysis)
  • Round 3: Ortiz 10-9 (my analysis)
  • Machida 29, Ortiz 28 (my analysis)
  • Machida 30, Ortiz 27, Unanimous Decision, 3, 5:00 (official results)
  • My UFC 84 fight prediction record: 2-0
  • My UFC 84 fight betting record 0-1

I’d like to see Tito win this fight. I bet on him, but I think he needs to fight a near perfect fight to win. Good start with Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” intro music. As I said in my pre-fight analysis, if Tito can’t take Lyoto down he won’t win. Let’s see if he can get it done in Round 2.

Regardless of how technical and smart Machida’s fighting style is, it sucks to watch. He looks like Kalib Starnes with a counter punch. Yve Lavigne takes a dive to excite the crowd. Ooh, Tito almost had it with the triangle, but I have Machida winning 29-28. Fans booing Machida.

Well, I took a chance on Tito, and he almost pulled it off. $10 down the tubes. Thanks Tito! I’ll have to pull out some of Jenna’s movies for payback.

Jack Daniels

  • BJ Penn leads pre-fight poll with 65%
  • David Spade in the house with the mini-bar bottle of Jack Daniels.

It’s fight time…

Fight 1: Thiago Silva vs. Antonio Mendez

  • Silva, TKO, 2, 2:00-2:59 (my prediction)
  • Silva, Tapout due to Strikes, 1, 2:00-2:59 (official result)
  • My UFC 84 fight prediction record: 1-0

Not a good start for Silva. He got dropped by an early head kick, but recovers nicely to take down, mount, then viciously ground-and-pound Mendez, forcing him to tap.

  • The UFC 84 pre-fight show is on and I’m pumped to get this goin’. It’s a great fight card on paper, so let’s hope everybody comes to fight. Say what you want about Dana White and the UFC they do encourage the fighters to fight and anyone who doesn’t will get Kalibed.

Kalib Starnes quits UFC?

UFC 84 Fight Predictions

UFC Fight Predictions, Analysis, Fantasy & Betting

These fight predictions for UFC 84 Ill Will from Las Vegas, NV have been logged by me (username: kickassfighter) over at the free UFC Fantasy League and I will be using my analysis and predictions here to place some bets over at the Bodog Life Online Sports Book.

Sean Sherk vs. BJ Penn

My fight analysis:

UFC Fighter, BJ PennSean “Muscle Shark” Sherk is the former UFC lightweight champion, coming off a unanimous decision victory over Hermes Franca at UFC 73 on July 7, 2007. But Sherk was fined, suspended and stripped of his belt after the post fight drug test came up positive for a banned substance. BJ “The Prodigy” Penn was the benefactor of the Sherk suspension as he beat Joe Stevenson by submission at UFC 80 in Jan of 2008, to capture the UFC Lightweight Championship belt.

After almost a year of trash talking, these two warriors will collide on May 24 at UFC 84. This is the most important fight in both of their careers and may be one of those fights that people talk about for a long time to come. I think these fighters truly dislike each other and would like nothing more than to shut the other one up. I see Penn being the more dominant fighter in the striking, grappling and octagon control, while Sherk has the aggression advantage.

  • Striking: Penn
  • Grappling: Penn
  • Aggression: Sherk
  • Octagon Control: Penn

Penn will be comfortable anywhere the fight goes, while I think the only place Sherk feels comfortable is on top raining haymakers down on his opponent, as we’ve seen in his last 3 fights, all unanimous decision victories. Sherk will need to use the same formula to beat Penn. Take him down and beat on him for 5 rounds to gain the decision from the judges. But I don’t see it happening.

VIDEO 1: BJ Penn prepares for Sean Sherk fight

VIDEO 2: BJ Penn prepares for Sean Sherk fight

Penn has great take down defense, a rock hard chin and is a Jiu Jitsu black belt. Even if he is taken down, he’s an expert from his back and has long limbs that he can use to isolate Sherk’s smallish-thick stature and short arms. I think BJ knows there are still questions about his desire to be the best ever, by his lack of total commitment to his conditioning. This was exposed when he ran out of gas and lost to Matt Hughes via TKO after dominating the early portion of that fight.

After seeing him dominate Joe Stevenson, I think BJ Penn knows it’s his time to shine and will come in superior shape. The fight will be a back and forth, up and down battle and I predict Penn will dominate the judges scorecards and put a stamp of validation on the lightweight belt for BJ Penn.

  • Winner: Penn
  • Method: Unanimous Decision
  • Round: 5
  • Minute: 5 (5:00)

Wanderlei Silva vs. Keith Jardine

My fight analysis:

If you like leg kicks, then don’t miss this light heavy weight battle as Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva takes on Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine. Silva likes to deliver high kicks to the head, to knock out his opponents (knees too). Jardine prefers low kicks to the legs and mid section, to wear his opponent down, and take the focus off his overhand right, as we saw in his knock out victory over Forest Griffin.

VIDEO: Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” vs Keith “The Techno Viking”?

Jardine always comes to the fight with a good game plan. And as long as he doesn’t come with that goofy, ape-looking stance, I think he’ll survive Silva’s initial burst of fists and then use his leg kicks to wear down Wanderlei. In the end Jardine will use his hands to knockout the once dominant and feared Axe Murderer.

  • Winner: Jardine
  • Method: Knockout
  • Round: 3
  • Minute: 3 (3:00 - 3:59)

Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida

Video fight analysis from Nuker:

My fight analysis:

Lyoto The Dragon MachidaIs Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida for real, despite his boring, play-it-safe, methodical style? Does Tito “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Ortiz have the heart and all around mma skills to make it back to the top of the mountain? Tito is fighting for a contract with a new organization while Machida is looking to further improve his status in the UFC light heavyweight division. It’s Tito’s time to shine. If he wants that big contract he’s been talking about, then a dominant victory would help his cause.

But a lackluster performance or dominant loss may further the UFC’s position that he’s not worth the big contract. See what Tito had to say about a host of topics in this video interview…

VIDEO 1: Tito Ortiz talks Machida, fued with Dana White and his last fight in UFC

VIDEO 2: Tito Ortiz talks Machida, fued with Dana White and his last fight in UFC

I see Oritiz’s fate in this fight, the same as I predicted for Sean Sherk in his fight. Tito needs to take down Lyoto and use his patented ground and pound to damage and punish his opponent for three rounds. Machida and the rest of the mma community knows Tito’s game is to dominate his opponent by taking them down and pounding on them.

I think Lyoto will keep Tito off balance with strikes and take down defense, doing just enough to win the rounds, without taking too many chances. In the end, Machida wins a unanimous decision to bring Tito’s UFC career to an end, it keeps Machida’s perfect record intact and sets him up for a potential title shot.

  • Winner: Machida
  • Method: Unanimous Decision
  • Round: 3
  • Minute: 5 (5:00)
